Media Release: 13th Annual March for Meals

Mayor Brown and community leaders deliver hot meals and awareness of Meals on Wheels services for seniors

LONDON, ON Mayor Matt Brown launches the national March for Meals campaign with the Community Champions Week initiative. Mayor Brown, will be delivering smiles and hot meals to London seniors with Meals on Wheels London, on Tuesday, March 10 at 11:30 am (Starting location is at Meals on Wheels London office, 356 Queens Ave, London, ON).

Community Champions Weeks takes place during March 9 to 20th, and those participating include Mayor Brown, City Councillors (Paul Hubert, Phil Squire, and Maureen Cassidy) and community leaders in London. These community leaders will be delivering meals and raising awareness of vital services Meals on Wheels programs provide locally and nationally.

Meals on Wheels is a very important part of our community and provides an invaluable service to those who are the most vulnerable.” said Mayor Matt Brown, City of London.

March for Meals is held in March to generate public awareness about senior hunger and isolation and to celebrate the invaluable services provided by Meals on Wheels programs across the nation. Additionally, March is also recognized and celebrated as Nutrition Month, through the Dietitians of Canada.

Locally, Meals on Wheels London, a charitable organization in operation since 1969, will host public events and fundraising initiatives during the March for Meals campaign. In addition to Community Champions Week, Meals on Wheels London will be holding a tasting event by offering free samples of hot meals at the Hamilton Road Health Fair on March 16th, and will conclude the campaign with an annual fundraiser, Walk for Wheels, on March 27th.

“Funds raised will support our meal subsidy programs to ensure that people in our community get the nutritional food they need on a daily basis” said Sarah Campbell, Executive Director, Meals on Wheels London.

Walk for Wheels will be held on Friday, March 27, 2015 at the Covent Garden Market from 2-4pm. Last year, $42,000 was raised for the client subsidy programs helping individuals with low incomes afford nutritious meals and transportation services.
